Enumeration writing workflow
When structuring Spanish exposition:
- Decide the relationship. Sequence, addition, parallel contrast, conclusion?
- Choose markers accordingly. primero, además, por una parte, en conclusión.
- Use pairs carefully. por una parte should normally be balanced by por otra parte.
- Avoid connector inflation. Not every sentence needs one.

A connector such as en primer lugar promises that more structure is coming. If the writer says por una parte, the reader expects por otra parte. If the writer says finalmente, the reader expects closure, not a new major topic. These words are not decorative; they create obligations.
Weak structure:
En primer lugar, la traducción debe ser clara. Además, hay errores. Por una parte, el texto es largo. Finalmente, faltan ejemplos. Asimismo, el registro no es constante.
The connectors are all plausible individually, but the paragraph has no architecture. The reader cannot tell which points are parallel, which are supporting details, and which one concludes the argument.
Stronger:
La traducción necesita una revisión en tres niveles. En primer lugar, debe corregir varios calcos léxicos. En segundo lugar, debe reducir las frases demasiado largas. Finalmente, debe unificar el registro para que el texto no oscile entre tono académico y tono publicitario.
Here the markers match the structure: three levels, three points, clear closure.
Parallelism matters
If you enumerate, keep the items grammatically parallel.
Weak:
El artículo debe explicar el problema, ejemplos claros y que el lector practique.
Better:
El artículo debe explicar el problema, ofrecer ejemplos claros y proponer práctica.
Or:
El artículo debe incluir una explicación del problema, ejemplos claros y una actividad de práctica.
Spanish exposition becomes much easier to read when listed elements share form.
Primero versus en primer lugar
Primero can be practical and direct:

En primer lugar is more expository or argumentative:
En primer lugar, conviene distinguir entre traducción literal y traducción funcional.
Both mean “first,” but they live in different discourse environments. A recipe, product manual, essay, and policy report do not need the same sequencing style.
Asimismo is not just fancy además
Además is a broad additive connector. Asimismo is more formal and often links parallel points.
El curso incluye lecturas guiadas. Asimismo, ofrece ejercicios de repaso.
This works if the two items are parallel features.
But in ordinary prose, además may be clearer:
El curso incluye lecturas guiadas. Además, tiene ejercicios de repaso.
Do not choose asimismo merely to sound advanced. Choose it when the register and parallel structure support it.
Repairing overconnected prose
Learner essays often overuse connectors because teachers have encouraged “linking words.” The result can sound mechanical.
Overconnected:

Cleaner:
