Puesto is the job position or role.

Important verb:
desempeñar un puesto / cargo — hold/perform a position
Do not translate funciones as mathematical functions in this context. It means duties or responsibilities.
Salary and compensation
Common terms:
salario — salary/wage
sueldo — salary, often monthly pay in many contexts
remuneración — compensation/pay
retribución — remuneration, more formal, common in Spain-like contexts
pago — payment
nómina — payroll/payslip
bruto — gross
neto — net
prestaciones — benefits, but country-specific
Example:
El salario bruto mensual será de 2.000 euros, pagadero dentro de los primeros cinco días de cada mes.
The gross monthly salary will be 2,000 euros, payable within the first five days of each month.
Bruto and neto matter. Gross salary is before deductions; net salary is after deductions. A learner should not compare salaries without knowing which is stated.
Jornada and schedule
Jornada is one of the most important employment words. It means workday, working time, or working schedule depending on context.
Common phrases:
jornada completa — full-time schedule
jornada parcial — part-time schedule
jornada laboral — working day/work schedule
horario — schedule/hours
horas extraordinarias / horas extra — overtime
turnos — shifts
descanso — rest/break

Example:

Jornada is not simply “journey.” In work Spanish, it is time worked.
Vacation and leave
Common terms:
vacaciones — vacation/annual leave
permiso — leave/permission
licencia — leave/license, depending on country
baja — leave/medical leave, Spain-like usage in some contexts
incapacidad — disability/medical incapacity leave, country-specific
días hábiles / naturales — business/calendar days
Example:
El trabajador tendrá derecho a veinte días hábiles de vacaciones anuales.
The employee will have the right to twenty business days of annual vacation.
Tendrá derecho a signals entitlement. Mark it as a right, not merely a possibility.
Benefits: prestaciones and more
Prestaciones can mean benefits, but the exact content varies by country.
Possible benefit terms:
seguro médico — health insurance
seguridad social — social security/social insurance system
aguinaldo — bonus/13th-month-like payment in several countries, country-specific
prima vacacional — vacation premium, country-specific
vales de despensa — meal/grocery vouchers, country-specific

Do not translate prestaciones mechanically. In employment, it may refer to statutory or contractual benefits.
Probation period

Se establece un período de prueba de tres meses.
A three-month probationary period is established.
The legal effect of probation varies widely. The language identifies the clause; local law determines consequence.
Termination: despido, renuncia, terminación
Exit language is critical.

despido — dismissal/termination by employer
renuncia — resignation
dimisión — resignation, more common in some regions/registers
preaviso — notice
finiquito — final settlement, meaning varies by country

Example:
Cualquiera de las partes podrá terminar el contrato mediante preaviso por escrito con treinta días de antelación.
Either party may terminate the contract by written notice thirty days in advance.
Despido is not the same as renuncia. One is employer-driven; the other is employee-driven.
Obligation and permission clauses
Employment contracts often use legal modal language:

When you see podrá, ask who receives power. When you see deberá, ask who bears duty.

Plain reading:
The employee will perform the role of administrative assistant, with a 40-hour weekly schedule and a gross monthly salary of 1,800 euros. He/she will have the right to the vacation and benefits established by applicable law and by this contract.

- Identify document type: employment, services, internship, contractor, temporary.
- Identify parties and roles.
- Find position and duties.
- Find salary: gross or net, frequency, payment date.
- Find schedule: hours, shifts, remote work, overtime.

- Find probation period.

This does not simply say “the worker will do tasks.” It defines the scope of duties and leaves room for assigned tasks within a category. A reader should ask:
What is the job title?
What duties are specific?
What duties are open-ended?
What category, classification, or level controls those duties?
Salary: gross, net, periodicity, and extras
Salario is not enough. Look for:

A learner should not assume that a monthly salary clause includes bonuses, overtime, meal vouchers, social security contributions, vacation pay, or severance. These may be in separate clauses or governed by law.
Jornada and schedule traps
Jornada is broader than “schedule.” It can refer to the workday, working time, or work arrangement. Related terms include:

The phrase sin perjuicio de prevents a false reading that the worker receives exactly that amount as take-home pay.
Termination vocabulary needs jurisdictional caution
Words such as despido, renuncia, dimisión, baja, terminación, finiquito, indemnización, and preaviso vary greatly by country and legal system. A learner can identify which clause concerns ending the relationship, but should not calculate rights from vocabulary alone.

Place of work and flexibility clauses
Modern employment contracts may include language about workplace location, remote work, travel, or schedule flexibility:

These phrases affect daily life. Según las necesidades del servicio can signal employer flexibility. Previo aviso introduces notice, but the contract may or may not specify how much notice. A careful reader marks the practical question:
Can the schedule, workplace, or duties change, and under what procedure?
Do not treat workplace clauses as background. They often determine commute, availability, equipment responsibility, and boundaries between work and personal time.
